Long before man. Long before light. Darkness reigned.
Then, light pierced its flesh. It hates the light. It hates even more man who casts light like a garment over this world.
A man with the blood of Death in his veins. A revenant priest. Both thought their lives couldn't get any worse. Hurricane Katrina proved them both wrong.
In the French Quarter, the last thing the setting sun sees is the transformation of St. Peter Street to the cursed Rue La Mort.
At the corner where it clashes with Royal Street, the jazz club, Meilori's, shimmers into being for all the children of the night to behold.
It is the Crossroads of Worlds. Within lies hallways leading to realms long thought myths.
Outside the club stands a being from beyond Time itself, waiting for his chance to extinguish all light, wrapping comforting darkness around himself like a womb once more.
Meilori's owner, the man with the blood of Death in his veins, is the gatekeeper there along with his best friend, a revenant priest.
During the month following Hurricane Katrina, the shadowlanders that the owner has kept restrained are unleashed.
And the being from outside Time knows his chance has come at long last.
Against the backdrop of Katrina's aftermath, an agnostic jazz club owner and his best friend, a haunted priest, engage enemies in the shadows that challenge both their belief systems.
But there are two things not in doubt their deep friendship for one another and the dark threat given license to kill by the absence of the police.
Samuel McCord is the owner of the jazz club Meilori's, a place in which almost anything is likely to happen and in which almost everything has.
He tries to live with the loss of his beloved wife while struggling against political incompetence and intrusions by the Russian Mob, European revenants, and an old enemy seeking final revenge.
Father Renfield tries to maintain his doubt-ridden faith under the twin barrage of his friend's questions and the overwhelming needs of Katrina's survivors.
The chaos in New Orleans has given the European revenants a chance to establish a beachhead in America.
Worse, McCord's life-long enemy, a man who insists on being called DayStar, is plotting in the shadows.
Gifted with a cruel intellect that makes Hannibal Lector look like a choir boy, DayStar has always been able to outwit McCord. But Sam's instincts tell him that if he is outwitted this time, all of New Orleans will suffer for his failure.
FRENCH QUARTER NOCTURNE eBook ROLAND YEOMANS LEONORA ROY
French Quarter Nocturne tells an alternate story of the aftermath of the hurricane Katrina in 2005, and how Capt. Sam bullied, bribed, threatened and tricked the American government into cleaning up the city and giving much needed food, shelter, medical supplies, and protection to the New Orleans survivors. With the help of the Soyoko R'yleh, Sam blazes through the civic center with his colts, meting out justice to the perpetrators of rape and murder against the helpless women and children. But of course all of Sams efforts at offering salvation to the frightened and abandoned survivors creates almost more problems than they solve. The deal with R'yleh unleashes hordes of hungry Soyoko upon the ravaged city and they are not sticking to the dead for a meal as their queen promised; the purloined assistance from the President, Govenor of Louisiana, and Mayor of New Orleans has backfired as mob-like factions of the undead swoop into the city for the promised financial gains; the spirits of the dead linger, feeding the dark hungers of the Amal and other undead that feed off human misery; and to top it all, DayStar stirs the public authorities to seek his arrestt in the opes of stopping his meddling in long term plans now come to fruition in the "calm" after the storm.
And what would a Roland Yoemans novel be without the romance? I won't spoil chapter 10's charm with an account of Sam and Meilori's heart wrenching dance; but I will leave you with this awesome quote:
"Love is not a shy beast to be caught but a rare moment to be treasured. It burns within each cell, a living seed of hope. Its rays invisible to most, seen only by the searching heart . ."
This alone deserves a five star rating, IMO.

FRENCH QUARTER NOCTURNE eBook ROLAND YEOMANS LEONORA ROY Reviews
Sam McCord is the dark hero of this epic tale of death and destruction inNew Orleans by the cataclysmic Katrina. Katrina not only leaves a hurricane ravaged city behind but unleashes all sorts of supernatural enemies of man all out for his blood and soul.
The idea of a bad hero is very exciting and quite fascinating to watch. The great conflict is between the natural pull of the dark side within our hero and his desire to believe in what he calls the great Mystery (God), who remains an elusive concept to a great extend. But as all of us are both good and evil, McCord can't help but make sure that goodwill is done for those most vulnerable in society and this pits him against powerful government figures and the master of all, Day Star, who has illusions of being Lucifer himself. You can imagine what happens when you have a delusional all powerful.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next instalment (Croal Nights) which the author was kind enough to send my way.
If you enjoy urban fantasy that is brimming o'er with dark vengeful supernaturals, then this book is a must read.
Roland D Yeomans' French Quarter Nocturne is set during the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, which devastated the proud, unique and unfortunately low-lying city of New Orleans. People struggled with what was happening in the wake of this disaster. How could they make sense of it? How could they come to terms with the horror?
Dark elements are abroad on the mean streets of New Orleans. The music is of a much darker cast in the jazz club Meilori's which has shimmered into life on Royal Street. Here it is a Crossroads of Worlds. Monsters are stalking the streets. Ghosts and vampires are abroad in an attempt to provide leadership in a leader-less city, to bring at least a semblance of order out of the mayhem and destruction that has occured. There are normal reptiles slithering around in the dingy waters but they don't pose much of a threat. Far worse than snakes, the chaos in New Orleans has given the European revenants a one-off chance to establish a beachhead in America. Worse yet, McCord's life-long enemy, DayStar, is plotting in the shadows.
Who can step up into the void?
Against the backdrop of Katrina's aftermath, an agnostic jazz club owner and his best friend, a haunted priest, engage enemies in the shadows that challenge both their belief systems. Sam McCord, a Texas Ranger, is trapped in a nether world with those who cannot cross over to the other side. McCord is a hero in his own right, but all the same he has personal issues. But it is the memory of one woman, Meilori, that never leaves him, that dogs his footsteps. Even in the murder and mayhem and lawlessness of post-Katrina, Sam never allows that others should commit atrocities. But is Sam McCord an innocent? Does he ever do the 'wrong' thing when dire need comes calling?
The French Quarter Noctune is a fantastic read, and you get used to bizarre instances where persons from mythological tales take centre stage. We meet famous writers from the past, too, all adding gloss to the many-layered story. But I warn you, if you must read it at night at least keep the light on.
