"I didn't know how much there was to want in the world until I saw Sheena, and then I wanted it all." These twelve short-short stories, illustrated by collage artist Stephen Knezovich, are as dark and absurd as they are poignant, playful, and true, examining men and women, love and loss, donkeys and goats, and murder, carnivals, and whiskey bosoms. "Nobody deserves love. Or everyone does. It comes and it goes of its own free will. Like fever. Like flood. Like the greatest thing you're ever gonna lose. And once it's gone, it's gone for good."

I wish all writers would let themselves get weird on the page. In Wonderland, Sam Ligon pairs horny he-goats with murderous blackbirds with forlorn love, all to comic effect, which heightens the humanity of his stories. A great read.

Wonderland Ligon 9780990819394 Books Reviews

At the end of this book, you only want more of it, and to sign up for drunk yoga. Desperately.
I loved the short, powerful stories in Ligon's new collection. I devoured this book on the first read and have found myself going back to the stories in random order since. Each one contains a strange world that you feel in greater detail than the sum of words on the page, and the overall tone of the book is made even stronger and stranger by the beautiful collage/illustrations from Stephen Knezovich.
One of the funniest, weirdest collections I've ever read in my whole damn life. In "The Little Goat," a crass talking goat interrupts a pair of kids getting ready for some teenage hot-and-heavy in a pile of rocks. The dialogue is so snappy, surprising, and exact you'll find yourself talking like that dirty goat under your breath and in your dreams. In "Sing a Song of Sixpence," the old nursery rhyme takes on new and darker dimensions (even darker than an innocent maid getting her nose snipped off), the prose just as lyrical as any well told fairy tale. These stories are gems, but every story shines -- each one precise, vivid, darkly funny. Knezovich's collages are beautiful and strange in their own right; alongside Ligon's stories, they're gold.
If you want to find yourself reading a story called "Down on the Ass Farm" three times in a row because you need to figure out why it breaks your heart, this is the book to get. It's a fast read, but it's the kind of collection that you'll keep pulling off the shelf and re-reading because the stories keep opening up in different ways. You'll notice awesome lines and descriptions that you didn't catch the first time. And the collages are beautiful and disturbing and fantastic and they go so well with the text. Like with the stories, you'll want to go back and take a closer look at each piece. It's a great book all around.
The thirteen very brief short stories of Wonderland are eerie and familiar making reading them delightfully unsettling. Samuel Ligon’s prose is at once sweeping and particular making each character voice resonate with a casualness, a matter-of-fact vernacular, acting as a smokescreen for the dizzying nonsense of the stories. Each story is prefaced by what could be called a vintage collage by Stephen Knezovich. The pieces suggest the story earmarked but don’t quite give you much more than a quizzical angle to approach the prose yet the symbiosis is compelling.
