At last--a multi-faceted perspective of the complex man who possessed the ring, the cane, the cloak and the commanding voice of Dark Shadows! This book finally introduces Frid's loyal fans to the complicated man who developed and delivered the complex persona of Barnabas Collins to millions of TV viewers daily. Appreciative of his fans' continued support, Frid preferred to be perceived as a consummate actor, as well as an ordinary human being with personal strengths and flaws-- NOT as an occult figure!

Frid is portrayed as an intelligent, educated man who was full of contradictions. Polite and reserved in public, yet spontaneous and celebratory when entertaining acquaintances, Frid chose a semi-sequestered Manhattan lifestyle that afforded him his privacy, as well as the freedom to pursue various creative projects at will. Loved the man, loved the stories in the book. He was a great actor and loved reading about him.
This is a very interesting book with many memories from people who knew Jonathan Frid pretty well.
Very interesting book about an interesting and really great actor and man who played Barnabas on Dark Shadows series 1967 to 1971. A number of people write in the book. I think anyone who enjoys Dark Shadows will enjoy this book and learn more about the person who made it the hit is was and is.
I bought this as a gift for my aunt who recently re-discovered Dark Shadows after a TV channel airs it all the time. She had been reading articles online about Jonathan and has been touched by what a generous person he was. She absolutely loves this book. If she's happy, I'm happy!
this was a gift to my daughter who is a big Dark Shadows/Jonathan Frid fan. I am hoping I will be able to borrow it but she will probably require me to pay a security deposit~ LOL from my first peak - looks like a very good book. If you are a fan this is a must have
Love dark Shadows, as one of the studio kids, I met Mr Frid many times. He was always a class act, same later when he started to attend the different Dark Shadows convention, ex, Dark shadows Festival, Shadowcon, and Manhatten Shadows. He was a good guy, and he is missed.

Who doesn’t remember Barnabas Collins? Well, ok, who of my age bracket 60+ doesn’t remember him or anyone over 40 who caught the syndicated programs? Yes, I’m guilty. I ran home after school to watch it forcing my parents to get me an early Christmas gift of my very own Black and White TV so I wouldn’t disturb my mother’s favorite soaps. Now that was truly surprising as it was my mom who introduced me to Dracula when I was all of about 9 years old by letting me stay up to watch the late show one late October Saturday night.

Remembering Jonathan Frid is a book of recollections, recalls, remembrances of Mr. Frid’s life and work. They are primarily from people who worked with him either on Fan festivals, his one-man productions, few stage performances; all after his infamous series about that tormented vampire.

Remembering Mr. Frid is a great compilation and a pretty honest look at this legend in our own times. Probably my favorite chapter is Frid Forever Is Folklore written by Michael Culhane. Mr. Culhane proceeds to convince Mr. Frid that Dark Shadows, Barnabas Collins and even Jonathan Frid had and has become intricately woven into American Folklore. Truly they have. I realized this even while watching the series back in the late 60’s.

Curmudgeonly, crumpy, forgetful were adjectives often used in reference to his behavior during his later years. Interestingly I can identify with that in myself. This didn’t stop me from seeing a deeper side of the man. I knew, even like Bela Lugosi, that he did not appreciate being known as a “vampire” but want to be known for his talent of acting and directing.

Jonathan Frid had many dreams and aspirations in his life, foremost was to be the best he could at his art… acting. There was no doubt that he was. I sat and envied all those who remember seeing him in Arsenic And Old Lace, Mass Appeal or being directed by him in Lion In Winter. I was unable to see the road shows of Arsenic and Old Lace and I knew that they had toured in Philadelphia only an hour away from me. (Sigh)
In 1994, I believe, I did catch his one-man show Fools and Fiends at a near by Penn State Extension one cold October night. He was as they all said mesmerizing. Characterizations were flawless. I’m very critical of anyone who recites Poe’s Tell Tale Heart because it is usually so over done. Not so with Jonathan Frid.
After the show he spent another forty minutes just foraging through the questions afterward. Many, I must say were fandom oriented. Even after that he endured our autograph sessions in the lobby of the theatre complex. Do you know he had no there to set up an area, see to his comfort or his need for a break, cup of coffee, privy break? That’s where I actually stepped in. I parted the sea of autograph seekers to make sure there was a table and chair for him to sit at by ordering/asking the security guard to get those items. As soon as I did this Mr. Frid looked at me with surprise and simply smiled. I also “requested” that someone get him his desired drink, black coffee, and a snack from the vending machine down the hallway. As if I had summoned a genie someone came up with the said items.
Mr. Frid was very tired but he felt he had a further job to perform and so he did.
Not much more happened except I was last to get my autograph and a thankful handshake and I and my Lady friend left.

My delight in reading his thoughts and takes on some of his fellow actors and employees and volunteers. His comments regarding David Selby, Lara Parker, Alexandra Isles, John Karlen and, yes even Grayson Hall. You have to read those if you were really into Dark Shadows.

My only set back with the book was the proof reading or possibly lack of it. There were several annoying typos and misplaced words as well as punctuation. But… it was in print and that was all that counted.

Memories. That’s all we have now. Memories are what we all become. For the past four days I immersed myself in my own memories while reading the others. So, I recommend you to do the same.
