I grew up in Texas with a Momma who was the Queen of frying foods. Momma, known as Dickie Bird to her family loved to cook. Her fried chicken was second to none. This book contains many of my Momma fried food recipes. My sister, Alice May Lee learned from my Momma and she passed on many of these recipes to her. When people were invited to our home or my sister's home, they were in for a treat. Nobody ever went away hungry or complaining that was a bad meal. Good Texas comfort meals meant providing the perfect atmosphere for great memories at the dinner table. Fried foods bring good memories back to me. Create some of your own great memories with these easy to use 28 fried food recipes. It won't be long before your family will be telling you, "You fry it, We'll try it".

What a shockingly sinful recipe book You Fry It, I'll Try It! (Texas Cooking) is! At a time when everyone seems to be looking for low-fat/low cholesterol/no sugar/dairy free/no gluten/vegetarian recipes, this little recipe book doubles down on the diet political incorrectness with meat, milk, fat, sugar, and gluten galore. The author does state that this kind of food should be eaten in moderation for health reasons, and in his one nod to health consciousness, the recipes often include a tip to drain the food on paper towels to absorb the excess grease.

This folksy style book includes a functioning table of contents, photos, and more than 30 recipes for popular home-style Texas breakfast, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. Everything in the book really is fried except for biscuits and mashed potatoes, indispensable side dishes for some Texas meals. As it should be, the 'from scratch' recipes call for readily available 'real food' ingredients and no mixes or canned ingredients.

The desserts include some recipes for really over-the-top decadent items that I think were primarily only available at the Texas state fair, such as fried Twinkies, fried candy bars, and fried watermelon which I won't be trying, but some of the other dessert recipes are more mainstream like funnel cakes, apple fritters, and fried fruit pies. As the author says, "Hey, if you are going to try and clog your arteries with one meal, then you need to have dessert, especially a fried, finger-licking sticky dessert."

Well, why not live a little every now and then? I'm from Texas and these recipes look very authentic to me. Unlike the author's family, these aren't the kind of things that I would eat every week or even every month. I'm not fond of frying at home, but I'll admit that I did enjoy going out to a Texas home-style restaurant for a chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes smothered in cream gravy with a side of fried okra two or three times a year. The same goes for cornmeal-fried catfish and hushpuppies.

I live in a foreign country now and don't have the luxury of Texas restaurants, so this is a recipe book that I will be using -- within moderation, of course. My husband will be thrilled to try the fried jalapeño poppers! I highly recommend this book for when you just gotta have your Texas food fix, y'all.

ThankYou
This has all the old family recipes in one book. It's the only book you need! The few I've tried so far were perfect. The whole family loved it.
Being from the south, I love fried food. While I haven't tried everything yet, I'm going to soon.
Great recipes. This is a keeper. Have fun, but don't go overboard.
I got pictures. No recipes or stories just blank pages do not purchase pictures are pretty but can not say more because there are no recipes there. I hope it now has enough words to print
I married a Texas gal She tells me that doesn't make me a native, but I got here as fast as I could! I rate a restaurant by how well they make their their chicken fried steak. Just give me a nice chicken fried steak, some white gravy and a few yeast rolls and I am good to go! I am a big breakfast eater, so fry me up some bacon (No microwave bacon for me!), break the yolks on a couple of eggs and throw in some hash browns. That is a good way to start your day!

Great recipes, great book. We are in for some great new meals at our table. I think I am going to download a converter, convert this book to PDF and give it to my better half. Where else but in Texas could you find recipes for deep fried Snickers, Twinkies, and Ice Cream. I recommend this book for everyone.

Where is my wife... I am hungry.
Amazing how alike this is to the cooking where I was raised in Southwest Oklahoma and the way I learned to cook...except for the coastal influence. We did have a lot of fried fish from local streams and lakes though.
Everything was fried if it was smaller than a roast or whole chicken. I never saw a grilled item till I was in college, which was a long time ago.
I know we are all trying to live healthier now days; but try one of these recipes a week, cut out the dessert and do a bit more exercise. Life is meant to be enjoyed!
Love this book! I grew up on these types of recipes. I remember my mother and my grandmother cooking the same things. It was like a blast from the past. Well done and the humor is great. I love a cookbook that tells a story as well as giving you great recipes and this one does not disappoint. My family thanks you in advance because they are going to get Momma's Fried Chicken, Fried Okra To Die For and Mashed Potatoes for dinner tonight and this weekend for the big game, Jalapeno Poppers and Fried Cheese are on the menu. There is something for every occasion in this book. Highly recommended.
