Earl Ofari Hutchinson meticulously details in his It’s Our Music Too The Black Experience in Classical Music the black impact on classical music.
Hutchinson notes that there are numerous books which have dissected and re-dissected every possible aspect of classical music—the composers, performers, their compositions, the musical structure, the history, and even the gossip and minutiae about the composers and performers. Yet, there are almost no books that focus on the significant part that black composers and performers played in influencing and in turn being influenced by classical music
“The list of Africans, African-Americans and Afro-European composers, conductors, instrumental performers, and singers,” says Hutchinson, “is and always has been, rich, varied, and deep. Sadly, the recognition of this has almost always come in relation to the work of a major European or white American composer.”
Hutchinson’s aim in It’s Our Music Too The Black Experience in Classical Music is not to update a book on blacks and classical music, or list the many notable individual breakthroughs of top flight black classical music performers and composers through the years. Instead he tells the story of how blacks have actually influenced the development, history and structure of classical music in its major varied forms; opera, chamber pieces, symphonies, and concertos. It’s a story that’s filled with tragedy and triumph, heart break and heroism.
Hutchinson gives an exciting and entertaining glimpse into Mozart’s “borrowing” a musical idea from the black violin virtuoso Chevalier Saint-Georges in the eighteenth century, Dvorak’s basing a major part of his New World Symphony on Negro Spirituals in the nineteenth century, and composers such as Gershwin, Copeland. Stravinsky and Ravel, wildly embracing jazz and blues in some of their popular and acclaimed works in the twentieth century. It’s Our Music Too The Black Experience in Classical Music is a fast paced, reader friendly, easy to understand look at just exactly what and how the greats in classical music have borrowed from and paid homage to jazz, blues, ragtime, boogie woogie and Negro spirituals.
“Throughout I name and recommend many pieces to listen to by the greats of classical music,” notes Hutchinson, “who were directly inspired by black musical forms as well as the works of black composers who have written exceptional works that have influenced the works of other classical composers.”
Hutchinson also tells how black performers such as Roland Hayes with his unique interpretations of German leider, and Marian Anderson and Jessye Norman with their distinctive tones and vibrant, fresh renderings of, and subsequent path breaking performances in the major works of opera giants, Giuseppi Verdi and Richard Wagner have greatly altered how these master’s works are heard today.

It’s Our Music Too!-ReviewBack when I was young and foolish, I would often dismiss classical music as European bourgeoisie crap. However as I approached my teen years I began to change my opinion of this art form. What contributed to that change was a Sunday afternoon television program called “Young People’s Concert.”
This program came on after NFL football on CBS (ABC followed AFL football with “The American Sportsman”). This was at a time when there was only one football game a week if you can believe that on TV. Anyway the “Young People’s Concert” was a program showing kids in my age group playing classical music. Not only were the players in my age group, but they were of various ethnicities, and races. What was perhaps the mind blower of this program was the conductor.
It was Leonard Bernstein.
The elite of all conductors, a virtuoso who was widely respected by all who loved and played music. He brought this art form to the masses and was instrumental in integrating the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
This obviously changed my attitude about classical music, however I kept my new opinions to myself lest my friends would call me a square.
All of the above leads me to say that Dr.Earl Ofari Hutchinson has done it again. Continuing from his first book on classical music “Beethoven and Me-A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music,” Hutchinson delves deeper into how classical music evolved and came to be. It’s no great wonder that many of the treasured musical pieces had African influences that brought out more than just melodies.
In all that I have read and heard throughout the years, many musicians and writer’s of all musical forms have credited this art form as being paramount to understanding and developing a love for all music. Not only should adults read this book, I also suggest that music teachers and instructor’s make this book required reading. Not only will it open up eyes, however it also open many minds that for years have been closed to even suggesting that classical music was a part of all cultures.
It’s time for all of you to dig it.

Thank you Dr. Hutchinson for educating America on the contributions of African-Americans on classical music. I've learned about African-American contributions to musical genres like folk, country, blues, jazz, and rock-n-roll but classical was totally unexpected for me. We need to know all our history to truly appreciate our rich and colorful culture.
It's Our Music Too... is a real contribution to the notion of culture, who's it is, where it resides and the breadth of its influence. Personally, I'm a fan of HIP-HOP, but It's our Music has shone a light on the Classical genre, music I rarely listened to. That's changed now and it was a real gift to me and to my family.
Great Read
Earl has his finger to the pulse. He's always worth a read.
This book is geared towards the student, not the general reader. It lists several musicians and composers with a listening guide.
While we enjoy the soothing, inspirational effect classical music has on our souls, we must really appreciate what African Americans put into that genre! They add a beautiful facet to classical music.
I am excited to learn about the world-wide contributions Black men and women have given as composers and musicians to the refined art of classical music. Thank you Mr. Hutchinson for sharing about this memorable legacy they have left to us.
